Therapy Dog Certification Program

Therapy Dogs provide emotional support in hospitals, schools, hospices, nursing homes, and similar environments, bringing joy with their presence.

What training does a therapy dog require?

A therapy dog benefits from a solid foundation in basic obedience, good manners, and social skills, is gentle, and is at ease around new people and situations.

Essential qualities include a steady, consistent temperament, reliability and connectivity amid distractions, and a gentle, loving nature. Core training skills for a therapy dog include excellent manners and life skills such as sit, down, stay, come when called, and leash manners. Greeting skills with people, such as not jumping on people, mouthing, or growling. Well-groomed, clean, and in healthy body condition.

Comfortable with all ages, handling from strangers, recovering from loud noises and dropped items, and comfortable with equipment such as wheelchairs and crutches.

STEP ONE - APPLICATION

Complete the application form, sign the code of conduct, ethics, and policy documents.

STEP TWO - REQUIRED PAPERWORK

Provide proof of vaccination and a health certificate from your Veterinarian. A criminal background record check. Liability insurance. Standard first aid and CPR courses for both dogs and humans (optional but highly recommended). Required to be submitted by the course completion. 

STEP THREE - TRAINING, CANINE EDUCATION AND OBSERVATION

Complete THREE online canine education modules, reading, and videos. and an in-person TEN group dog training class program covering all the training required for a well-trained therapy dog, with TEN observation visits. 

STEP FOUR - Private Training

Schedule a one-hour private training session to help guide through behavior concerns and fine-tune training. This is scheduled at St Vital Park, or online.

step six - certification

Certificate of course completion, valid for one year. Yearly certification testing is required.

STEP FIVE - FINAL TESTING WITH CERTIFICATION

The test will be based on therapy dog training through the course, with a combined pass or fail grade and percentage grading. Testing will be hosted at St Vital Park about 3 weeks after course completion. 

What is the cost of the therapy dog certification training program?

The cost of the training program is $500.00 plus GST, for a total of $525.00!

Training Loyal Companions Academy is thrilled to support Kath Marie and her new adventure with CARE PACK! 'Our goal is simple: No one should have to face life’s difficult moments alone'.

CARE PACK (Canine-Assisted Response to Emergencies) is a community of certified, specially trained therapy dog teams dedicated to providing trauma-informed emotional support during emergencies, critical incidents, disasters, and times of crisis.

Our therapy dogs and experienced handlers bring comfort, connection, and compassion to individuals, families, bystanders, first responders, and communities affected by stressful or traumatic events.

FAQ

What is the time frame for completing TLCA’s Therapy Dog Training Program?

Course completion must be accomplished within three months, including the final exam. The course has a firm start and finish date

At What age can my dog participate in the program?

Any time after 6 months of age! Your dog must be at least 1-1.5 years of age to participate in the final test. Training is consistent and ongoing!

What will I receive with the Certification of the course?

A certificate of course completion will be provided, along with a graduation gift for you and your dog!

How many students will be in each class?

Each class session will have 6-8 participants.

My dog is already very well trained; can I fast-track the program?

Not at this time. Your dog, the owner, and I must have an outstanding relationship built over time through consistent training for optimal assessment and training.
