Visiting THERAPY DOGs

Visiting Dog Therapy Program is typically for dog owners who visit schools, hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THERAPY DOG TRAINING:

  • Gentle and calm relaxed and confident disposition.
  • Excellent life skills training and manners with socialization and exposure to a wide variety of life experiences.
  • Friendly with people and other dogs.
  • Dogs are required to be well groomed, healthy with no major health concerns, up to date with Veterinary recommendations for vaccines.
  • Spayed or neutered (zero tolerance of marking or humping behaviors).
  • Minimum of 1.5 years of age.

Assisted Therapy Dogs

Assisted Therapy Dogs work with their owners who are typically in the profession of teacher, educator, therapist or phycologist or doctors. A calm well behaved dog at their workplace that can bring benefit to the students or patients.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ASSISTED DOG TRAINING:

  • Gentle and calm relaxed and confident disposition.
  • Excellent life skills training and manners with socialization and exposure to a wide variety of life experiences.
  • Friendly with people and other dogs.
  • Dogs are required to be well groomed, healthy with no major health concerns, up to date with Veterinary recommendations for vaccines.
  • Spayed or neutered (zero tolerance of marking or humping behaviors).
  • Minimum of 1.5 years of age.

Therapy Group Dog Training Classes

Sunday April 7th at 9:30AM. Last class May 5th. Each class is 45-50 minutes in length.

Cost is $180.00 plus GST = $189.00 for all five classes. Classes are held at the St Norbert Community Center.

WHAT IS A THERAPY DOG?

Therapy dog’s join their handler/owner typically dog owners or educators, teachers, psychologists, counsellors and doctors - at their workplace to help their students, clients, customers and/or patients at a hospital or library. Therapy dogs are not trained service task dogs and do not have public access, unless invited to the space for therapy dog companionship.

How do I train my dog to be a Therapy Dog?

Enroll in positive reinforcement, connection and choice-based group dog training classes or private in-home training. The Canadian Kennel Club Canine Good Neighbor training program and evaluation with testing is an excellent resource for certification. Connect with the location you would like to bring your dog to for therapy work, request their rules guidelines and regulations for Therapy Dog visitation.
